Citizens advised to avoid going out as powerful gusts strike the country.

Severe gusts attaining speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 households without power and led officials to cancel over 100 aircraft departures, according to local media.

Locals have been advised to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for further electricity and network failures.

Broad Impact and Crisis Response

The electricity loss seems to be impacting households mostly in the southern region, while agencies say that power was being slowly brought back.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, and utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the winds.

In Wellington, a man was lost his life after being struck by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a woman was pushed toward moving cars on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services to and from the city have been cancelled due to the gusts, whereas various routes and public facilities are also closed.
