Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
